Mrs. Ruth Ebunlomo Olagunju was born to Late Mr. James and Late Mrs. Comfort Adegoke of Kokoti’s compound, Igosun, Kwara State, Nigeria. She spent many years in Lagos with her late father. Momo respected her father so much. When it was time for her to get married, she was instructed by her father that he would like her to marry someone from Igosun. Although at this time she had spent a lot of time in Lagos, she returned to Igosun in her early of 20s to marry her late husband, Mr. Solomon Atoyebi Olagunju.
For most of her life, she was a trader and sold farm produce as well as gari. She was fondly referred to as “Iya Eleelo.” She would sometimes walk for more than 20 miles one way to go to other towns to sell her goods. Momo was very industrious and dedicated to her trade. In fact, she once told God that if she ever sold enough produce to make 20 naira profit, she would kill a chicken. At that time, the only time you would kill a chicken was for a holiday. The day God answered her prayer, she was so excited! She immediately killed a chiken to make stew and pounded yam. When her late husband and late son, Mr. Simeon Opoola Olagunju, arrived at home they were shocked. They knew something special had happened when they saw the chiken and pounded yam. It wasn’t even a holiday. Although she started from such humble beginnings, God elevated her in so many areas of her life. She was very thankful daily for all that she experienced.
Momo gave her life to Jesus as her Lord and Savior earlier in her life. She was baptized by Reverend Awomolo at First Baptist Church Igosun where she was a member until her death. She was a devout Christian who served the Lord with great joy and obedience. Because Momo could not read, she memorized so many scriptures and frequently quoted the Bible when having conversations. Momo was a generous giver who supported many projects at church and was very generous with her tithes and offering.
If Mrs. Ruth Ebunlomo Olagunju’s life can be summed up with one word, it would be GENEROSITY. Momo was known for her generosity at church, in the compound, throughout the entire community of Igosun and beyond. When visiting Momo, it was impossible to leave empty-handed. She received so much happiness from her opportunities to share and give to others. She loved to share food with people and was very quick to lend a helping hand whenever there was an opportunity. Until her death on 28th December 2020, she was challenging people to understand what it meant to have a life of giving and being a generous person.
Because of Momo’s life of generosity, in May of 2016, Ebunlomo Olagunju Foundation was founded to let her know that her life of generosity would continue after her. She was alive to witness many acts of kindness and generosity through the Foundation which brought her so much joy.
Momo was graced with a long life, a sharp mind and a lot of wisdom. She loved to impart wisdom to people and give elderly advice from her own experiences to help people navigate life.
Momo was generous, very forgiving, loved to sing, was a joyful person to be around and a dedicated prayer warrior. She loved the word of God and frequently used the Bible to drive home a point. She was amicable but very principled in her ways. Our loss is heaven’s gain. We will forever keep you in our hearts until we meet to part no more. Adieu Momo! Good night!
